The lid matters as much as the jar. Twist-off caps are chosen according to the diameter of the jar opening, measured in millimetres. The most common sizes range from 43mm to 82mm, with 63mm among the most widely used for jam jars. Before ordering, always check the neck size of your jar, so the lid you choose is a perfect match.
For preserves that need to keep for a long time, always use new lids: the inner seal only guarantees a secure closure once.
The lid is also the simplest way to make your preserves recognisable. Alongside classic gold and black, there are patterns such as red check and navy check, perfect for a traditional look. Choosing one colour for each type of product, for example one for jams and one for chutneys, also helps customers find their way around your stall.
