One of the most practical and visually effective things you can do for a garden party food table is serve directly from jars. Not on platters, not in bowls: in glass jars that guests can reach into, spoon from or simply pick up and pass around.
Wide-mouth jars are ideal for this. Fill them with:
A layered salad: grains at the base, roasted vegetables in the middle, leaves and dressing on top. Each guest takes a jar and shakes it before eating. No serving spoons, no mess, no large bowls to transport.
Quick-pickled vegetables: thinly sliced red onion in cider vinegar and sugar, ready in 30 minutes. Cucumber ribbons with dill. Pickled chillies for the table. Each in its own small jar, lid off, with a small fork alongside.
Sauces and dips: a jar of homemade herb sauce, a jar of chilli oil, a jar of aioli. Self-contained, easy to move around the table and easy to close and refrigerate whatever is left over.
The jars become part of the table setting. No additional decoration needed.
